Eaton offers to match charity fundraising

As part of its activities to mark the centenary of MEM, Eaton is offering to match money raised for deserving charities by employees and customers. Up to £50,000 is available to match funds raised for approved causes.

Half of the £50,000 has been earmarked for activities by Eaton employees and the same amount for customer activities. Charities supported by employees have to be in the fields of arts and culture, civic causes, education or health. Meanwhile the Electrical and Electronic Industries Benevolent Association (EEIBA) has been nominated as the appropriate cause for fundraising by electrical wholesalers, contractors and other Eaton customers.

In one of the first events, £847 was raised for the EEIBA in a raffle at an Eaton Golf Day. This was matched by the Centenary fund, yielding a total of £1,694 for the EEIBA. Another £2,623 was raised by a raffle at the Electrical Industry Awards 2008 in October.

Eaton employees have already engaged in a range of sponsored activities including half marathons, abseiling down the walls of Dudley Castle, tea parties and naughty bingo. These have raised money for Cancer Care, The Stroke Association, Children in Need, Guide Dogs for the Blind, McMillan Cancer Support and a local visually impaired association.

The most impressive achievement to date was by Eaton’s International Policy Manager, Kevin Harris, who raised over £4,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Liver Ward 8 on a climb up Sharp Edge in the Lake District. Last year Kevin underwent major heart surgery. Kevin’s three year-old granddaughter is a patient in Liver Ward 8.

The Charity Matching scheme was launched in September, the month in which the Midland Electric Manufacturing Company Ltd. was formally registered 100 years ago. It will run until August 31 or until the funds are exhausted. There is a limit of £1,000 available per charity or event and at least £50.00 must be raised per event. Costs must not amount to more than 25% of the funds raised.

The Midland Electric Manufacturing Company Ltd was established in 1908 in a workshop behind domestic premises in Conybere Street Birmingham, only three miles from the present Eaton factory and offices in Reddings Lane, Tyseley. The MEM brand is one of the best-known and respected brands in the UK electrical industry, covering a complete spectrum of electrical installation equipment from the main switchboard to the socket-outlet. MEM became part of the Eaton Corporation in 2004. Eaton is proud of the 100 year history it has inherited and has endorsed this with a new trademark…. Eaton MEM.
