When Gareth Leek, Environmental Manager of Companies’ House in Cardiff, saw the potential of retrofit technology to cut energy consumption in their multi-storey car park he oversaw the replacement of 600 5ft (58 watt)T8 lamps with 5ft (35watt)T5 amps using ‘Save It Easy’ units from ECSL.
Companies House car park is lit for 12 hours per day for 6 days per week and, following initial evaluation, it was decided that not only could ‘Save It Easy’ units be used to achieve dramatically better ballast and lamp efficiencies but also that the superior light output of the T5 lamps and their longer efficient operating life made it possible to de-populate existing luminaires and reduce to 430 the number of lamps installed.
The action has saved thousands of pounds. As a result of using ‘Save It Easy’ to convert 430 T8 lamps to the equivalent number of T5s, annual electricity consumption was reduced by 53,127 kWh. Annual energy costs have been cut by £3,719 and CO2 emissions by 23 tonnes. In addition, As a result of entirely eliminating 170 T8 lamps, an additional annual energy saving of 45,827kWh was achieved, reducing costs by a further £3,208 and CO2 emissions by a further 20 tonnes.
Total percentage savings came to 66% and, on the basis of the combined
Energy economies plus use of retrofit to enhance rather than replace existing fittings, payback period for this project is estimated at only 0.74 years.|
