Using 12 km of Instaflex piping and over 10,000 related fittings George Fischer have customised the risers and associated hot and cold water supply, heating and cooling pipework for Manchester’s 47 storey Hilton Tower; the UK’S tallest residential building, and the country’s seventh tallest structure.
Risers, customised in 8 storey sections, complete with all pressure reducing and isolating valves, were lowered down the ducts. The run outs, custom-made to suit various room configurations on each floor level were then connected and positioned onto the concrete floor, under the final raised access floor.
The integrity of the fittings, and the customising of the services, was proved when an initial test reported over 99 per cent successful.
Designed and assembled from Instaflex piping at George Fischer’s Coventry facility the customised sections were delivered, as required, on the Just-in-Time principle, thereby eliminating the requirement for storage space and the potential for on site damage.
As all metal piping connections were less than 2 m, it eliminated the need for earth bonding and the associated costs of employing skilled electricians for such work and eliminated, or reduced, the need for skilled craftsmen on other trades.
Customised at George Fisher’s special facility, by their own trained technicians, the result decreased on-site installation time and made a valuable ‘financial’ contribution to the overall reduction of the contract time
The dramatic 171 m high shimmering glass clad structure, costing £150 million, comprises shops, 285 roomed Hilton Hotel and, from the 25 floor upwards, 219 one and two-bed apartments and penthouses priced from £100,000 to £2.5 million.
