Credit cards are a quick and convenient handy way of making payments at the time that suits you best. The most obvious reason for using a credit card is because of its convenience. You may not have the money to hand and, until your next pay cheque goes in, you might not even have it in the bank. But by using a credit card you can still make a purchase or pay outstanding bills. Conversely, if you are someone who only uses cash, you'll know only too well that when it's gone, it's gone. Having a credit card allows you the freedom to deal with unexpected financial situations, be it a pleasant purchase or an unexpected demand.
The commonest concern for Internet shoppers is the potential for having their details stolen. However, most credit card companies provide protection for their customers from online fraud. If your card or its details are stolen and used by a criminal, you will not be expected to pay for their purchases. Any money they spend while in possession of your card will be returned. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for cash. If you unfortunate enough to have your money stolen, there is very little you or the police can do. Credit cards have unique numbers that that are directly linked to the provider's systems and as a result many criminals have been caught whilst using stolen credit cards. While paper money has serial numbers, it is not linked to any system and the likelihood that you keep a record of the numbers on your cash is minimal.
Credit cards offer vital consumer protection when it comes to making expensive purchases. Should you use cash to buy a product, you have little chance of reimbursement in the event that you do not receive it or it turns out to be faulty and the company goes into bankruptcy - an all too-common occurrence in the recent financial downturn. However, under Section 75 of the 1974 Consumer Credit Act, card issuers and retailers take joint responsibility for situations such as these. For credit card purchases valued between £100 to £30,000, you can claim a refund from your card provider if you do not receive the goods or they turn out to be faulty and the company that you have bought it from has gone into liquidation.
In addition to the protective aspects of using credit cards, there are other benefits that make them a more reliable form of currency than cash. Credit cards are widely accepted across the globe, meaning that you don't have to worry about the type of money in your pocket or the local exchange rate. A credit card's protective powers can also extend to other countries - especially where Internet shopping is concerned. Using a credit card, the provider still has the same obligations to protect your purchase, even if the product you have bought is from another country.
More and more consumers are embracing the incentives offered by credit cards, opting to replace the paper in their pockets with plastic. But how do you find the best one for you? With all the deals and incentives on offer, the choice can appear a confusing one. The best way of cutting through the sales speak is to use an online comparison website. These websites detail the offers and interest rates offered by each provider, allowing you to make a convenient and educated choice.
In a century that has seen the world made smaller by the Internet, credit cards are the closest thing we have to a global currency. The onset of a global online marketplace has seen credit cards become the currency of choice across the world. However, unlike traditional cash, they are supported by a network of financial institutions that have their customer's best interests at heart. While many of us will still yearn for the chink of change and the feel of a crisp note, there can be little doubt that the benefits offered by credit cards far outweigh the aesthetics offered by a pocket full of cash.
